What’s up everyone, we are so BACK with a special in-between-the-seasons episode for ya — our favorite movies, tv, music, and more from 2024. As always, our picks offer more of a psychological profile of us than anything else.

S01E15 - Ocean's 8

It’s Amanda’s turn to pick a movie, and this is one for the ages. We’re geeking out and breaking down the iconic, legendary, absolutely STACKED Ocean’s 8 (2018). Amanda makes the case for why this movie stands toe to toe with the original Ocean’s trilogy, and honestly, it’s just a freaking good time. Um and have we mentioned the stacked cast?? Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and just to push it over the top in the best way, Rihanna. Playing the team’s hacker. Yeah, uh huh. *nods slowly* No big deal. 

 

Plus we’ve got some of the best fashion choices to ever hit the silver screen, big blingy Liz Taylor diamonds, actual Cartier, the Met Gala, celebrity cameos everywhere you look, a heist in a heist, dynamite chemistry between our leading ladies, and all of the Ocean’s-style effortless cool you can handle. Oh, and we figured out how to make this a trilogy with a future Ocean’s 9 and 10. You’re welcome. ;)

S01E14 - Twisters

We’re back with quite the episode for you today — to round out season 1 of The Show Off, Kampy and Amanda are each choosing a full movie to geek out about and break down for your listening enjoyment. We’re starting with Kampy’s pick — Twisters (2024). Which, for the record, is a pretty good sequel to an excellent 90s cult classic disaster film. But neither you, dear listener, nor Amanda are getting away that easily because Kampy’s also giving us all an education on tornadoes and the history of storm chasing in America. Which actually, is pretty wild and fascinating. Buckle up folks, and whatever you do, do not try to hide from a tornado under an overpass.

S01E12 - Imposters 1x02 "My Balls, Dickhead"

We’re back with part 2 of the “brilliant but cancelled” round of The Show Off with Kampy’s pick — a little show called Imposters. This Bravo network dramedy was unjustly cancelled after just two short seasons, but we’re here today to resurrect it and give it the spotlight it deserves. (How about that 93% on Rotten Tomatoes??)

 

We’re chatting about two clueless idiots, one dynamite conwoman and her dubious team, a guy with anger issues, the twists and turns you don’t see coming, a subpar yard sale, learning to con on the road, a truly tragic missed opportunity for a running gag, the tech bros definitely not knowing where the bodies are buried, and the wild line that is “do you see my titties?? That’s right bitches cuz I ain’t your momma.” Like, what??

S01E11 - Lie To Me 2x04 "Honey"

Ever wonder what it would be like if you could read people’s minds by reading their faces, speech patterns, and body language? That’s basically what Lie to Me is about. We start a new round of The Show Off this week called “brilliant but cancelled,” aka “only the good die young.” Amanda’s pick is Lie to Me, a psychological procedural that made it about 2.5 seasons on Fox, starting in 2009 and ending in 2011. 

 

We’re learning about microexpressions, language tells, how to incorrectly handle a hostage situation, how to correctly (if briefly) impersonate an FBI agent, a very codependent business partnership/friendship/situationship, the world’s stupidest rescue plan, and Chekhov’s literal gun. There may or may not be a pop quiz at the end of the episode, so pay attention!

S01E10 - The Trial of Moffat Era Doctor Who

We’re sticking with the Doctor Who theme for just one more week, but this is a bit of a different episode. We’re expanding a long-standing debate between the two of us on Moffat era Who — Kampy stands for the prosecution, Amanda for the defense.

 

We’re talking about all the positives and negatives of this era of Doctor Who, including characterization of the Doctor and his companions, the fairytale of it all, the difference between a guy and his friends stumbling his way into adventures and a grand plan unfolding across the universe, a lot of themes and motifs, off the charts timey wimey-ness, and just a smidge of the unhinged. Just a smidge. What do we both agree you can’t debate? The man writes banger dialogue. And isn’t that what we all really want?
